Pikes Peak
Colorado, 14,115 FT
Pikes Peak sits on the front range of the Colorado Rockies and towers over the city of Colorado Springs. We've climbed Pikes Peak twice, once taking the Barr Trail and the second time taking the Crags Route. The Barr Trail is a grueling 13-miles one way with 7400 feet of elevation gain. We did that one in a day and took the cog railway down. The Crags Route has its own fun with a talus field at the end, but it is not quite as long. One really important note about Pikes Peak. Do not get caught above the tree line during a thunderstorm. There is no place to hide. Pikes Peak is by far the most danger I have been in on all my trips not heeding the warnings and descending when a thunderstorm was rolling in.
